I'd be grateful if anyone with a recent (say, since May 2006) Dell
laptop with Expresscard slot could tell me (i) if they received the
plastic blanking piece for the Expresscard slot and if so (ii) any part
number on the blanking piece.

PF795 is labeled on mine....XPS M140 Dell

The one on my three months old Inspiron 6400 is marked FH196. Hope
thats a help
