I have a phenomenon that I find most annoying: when I put my PDA into
the cradle, AS starts fine and it will synch ok. But about 15 seconds
later it suddenly disconnects. I can't do anything that takes longer,
like exploring the device or even opening Tools => Options in AS (which
gets only enabled after synchronization completed) since by that time
when the dialog opens the device has already diconnected.

The time it takes until the device disconnects after successful
connection seems to be influenced by the fact whether I connect directly
to my laptop's USB port or via a USB in the docking station. But even in
the first case it disconnects after a while (though then usually after
about 3 minutes, instead of 30 seconds).

My former PocketPCs used to stay connected forever, when sitting in the
cradle (and would resync every few minutes).

Any ideas or suggestions on this? Is this some Axim X51v "feature" (a
powersaving options or something similar)?

It sounds to me like you have something on your PC that's causing that
problem. You don't say what version of ActiveSync you're running or what
version of Windows Mobile your Axim is running, though, and I think we'll
need that to make suggestions.
