Hi all,

I have a recent HP dv5128TX laptop. Very happy with it! I upgraded the
memory myself to 1gig without any problems (did it cheaper myself than
through HP :) ). anyway, I would like to claim the 7gig recovery
partition on the machine's 80gig drive that holds all the Windows XP and
application install files. Thinking this through, will the DVD copies
that I initially made when I first turned on the laptop suffice and
negating the need for keeping those files on the hard disk??

Also, for good measure, I have a copy of Ghost imaging software. If I
install that and obtain an image of the recovery partition will that
enable me to have an easy re-install of my system should I change my
dard drive at a later date?

Thanks
Shane

Further to the above and perhaps more specifically, what I want to
ensure is that I can re-install all individual drivers and applications,
and reinstall the operating system (WinXP)from the recovery DVDs that I
have made?

The following is from HP's web site:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=1844603&os=228&lang=en&docname=c00608578

"
Removing the restore partition
One recovery option available, but not recommended, is removing the
restore partition from the hard drive. While this action will free up
storage space, the only restore or recovery option available is a
compete, destructive reformatting of the hard drive using the set of
recovery disks. The options to recover individual drivers or
applications, and to reinstall the operating system no longer exist."

Maybe I am reading it incorrectly, but my understanding is that all I
would be able to do is reformat the drive after removing the the
recovery partition! :(

Anyone clarify this for me?

Thanks,
shane

It probably means just what it says.

With the recovery partition in place, you can recover individual
drivers or applications and reinstall the OS.

When you've removed the recovery partition, you can only rebuild it
from scratch by reformatting the disk and starting over.

Why bother to recover the space anyway? By the time you need that
last 7 on the drive you'll want to get a 120G drive for it anyway.

Thanks for your reply. Your interpretation of what HP's site is what I
wanted to confirm :) ...that if i delete the partition I will lose the
ability to individually reinstall stuff...but at least I can restore
everything back to scratch from the the backup DVDs.

You are probably right about the 120gig drive. If i were to upgrade to
a drive that size, I would then be reliant on those very DVD's to
install everything.

Thanks,
Shane

No, you could use the copy of Ghost you have to copy everything from
your 'small' drive to a bigger one, and resize those partitions you
wanted to make bigger.
