In the Add or Remove Programs folder there are older Microsoft updates for
Windows XP and Java updates. Is it necessary to have/keep these updates here
or can they be removed and not effect anything.

Those are backups of the files that were replaced by the update. If your
sure you don't need to remove any of the updates, they're safe to delete.
See www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities, Remove Hotfix Backups for more
information and a tool to automatically remove them.

Doug, I read the OP as seeing entries in the Add/Remove programs
control panel, and I read your reply as referring to the folders under
the Windows folder.

If I'm right there's a problem with your reply; if I'm wrong there's a
problem with me :-)

But for safety's sake I had to ask...

Doug - Does your utility work with the 64-bit version of Vista Home
