If you are using Windows Mobile 6 and Windows Live Mail for push e-mail, what
is the data usage like?

I'm thinking of buying an HTC Touch Dual but would not have unlimited data.
Would push mail cause large bills?

Does the push mail keep a connection to the server open or does it only
transfer
data when a mail is actually received / sent.

Any information would be appreciated.

Not much. There are, in addition, several tweaks to even more reduce the
frequency of these "heartbeats". I've linked to some of these from my
mailing & power consumption & data usage-related articles / remarks from my
blog.

As a rule of thumb, even w/o "heartbeat" hacks, Push Mail won't use more
than 4-5 Mbytes a month. All this when run the entire day.

For my experience, the heartbeats use between 9-12MB per month if you leave
the server definition on its default.

It is quite acceptable considering the fact that most GPRS accounts nowadays
have at least 100MB flat use included.
