I recently bought a James Taylor One Man Band CD/DVD set. The CD runs fine on
my PC (a Dell XPS M1210 laptop bought in the US and running XP Media Center
Edition SP2 and Media Center v11) but the DVD won't run, giving me the
following error message:

Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because the disc prohibits
playback in your region of the world. You must obtain a disc that is intended
for your geographic region.

I bought 2 copies, one from Starbucks and one from Barnes & Noble and they
both behave the same. The DVD plays fine on my other PC's and on a regular
DVD player so I assume the problem is in the operating system - it must be
telling Media Center that I am not in the US. Or perhaps there is some other
DRM-related problem. Can someone help?

Thanks, Bob

DVD drives can be locked to a particular region. Normally this can be
changed up to 5 times by the user. You can use this tool to see what region
your DVD drive is set to

http://www.remoteselector.com/driveinfo.htm

And see this page to see what the regions correspond to.

Doug, thanks. The utility tells me that 'The Drive has Region Protection' and
that \the region code is 'Not Set'. I have 5 changes left. The DVD is SONY
DVD+-RW DW-Q58A UDS2. How do I change the region?

Thanks, Bob

In the Device Manager (right-click on "My Computer", choose Properties,
Hardware tab).

Expand the "DVD/CD-ROM Drives", right-click on the drive and choose
Properties

You should have a "Regions" tab, you can then select "United States"

Thanks to y'all's help, I managed to change the region parameter to Region 1
on my DVD. You would think that my DVD would play now, right? Well you'd be
wrong.

Now I get the following error message:

Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with
digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try
installing an updated driver for your video card.

I did as the message suggested and updated the driver (the video is an Intel
945GM) and I still get the error message. Any thoughts?

Thanks again, Bob
