I've tried a 140 watt rated CyberPower inverter to power a Toshiba A75
notebook. The AC power module that comes with the notebook from Toshiba is
rated at 19V, 6.3A or about 120W.

The CyberPower unit goes into shutdown mode after maybe a half hour of
powering the notebook.

If I remove the DC plug from the cigarette lighter receptacle, the metal
parts of the plug are too hot to touch. This after about 10 minutes of
powering the notebook, The inverter is fused at 10 amp so the current is
something less.

I contacted CyberPower and they told me to try a different vehicle (I did
and the results are the same as above) and if it got hot there the unit is
defective.

Does anyone have experience using an inverter to power a notebook with
similar power requirements, 120 watts max?

Does anyone have experience with CyberPower?

I tried powering a 75W incandescent light bulb and it seemed to work fine.
Maybe the 140 watt rating is extremely exaggerated?

Thanks for any comments.

ITYWF that the inverter is rated at 140 VA, not 140 Watts. They are are not
quite the same thing. Further, you have assumed that the power module input
power is the same as the output power. This is not the case - the input
power will be higher (not a lot higher, but higher). The actual VA will be
higher still.

Basically, the inverter that you are using is too small for the application.
