My laptop will not charge whilst in use - rather it discharges the
batteries, which must then be recharged with the machine shiutdown!

In Device Manager I've disabled, uninstalled & (XP then automatically
re-instals & enables) the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method
Battery.
But still this annoyance persists.

Any thoughts anyone?

Not reliably. Curiously, the power light (with no battery installed)
does not seem to hold on as easily as it (this same power light) does
when a battery is installed. I've noticed that the second battery - in
the dvd dock - seems to be ignored at times. Sometimes shown as not
installed. Sometimes ignored also for chargin. I suppose I'm just
about convinced that it's a problem with the connections at the power
socket......

Hrrummfff

Cheers though!

Every laptop that I have ever seen (and I service laptops) will run just
fine without a battery installed.

Hi Nho Whei,
W/o looking @ your laptop, sounds like your DC jack may need to be replaced
or re-soldered or your AC adapter has gone bad.
