Hi.
I have an older XP machine that I am replacing. Rather than dispose of the
tower PC, I thought "why not upgrade it to an XP WMC operating system and use
it with my non-DVR DirectTV receiver. Then I don't have to buy a new DVR and
I still get some mileage out of my existing PC. What I can't tell after
reviewing the microsoft.com website is how/if a XP WMC box connects to the
DirecTV receiver, how it controls the guide and channel selection on me
DirecTV receiver. Does this really work? I am not after HD like some other
posts. I just want to get a couple of "older" technologies to work together.

Regards,

Mark

To connect a Media Center Computer to a DirectTV receiver, you need a Tuner
in the MCE machine that has S-Video or Composite Video input, and the right
and left audio inputs.

The tuner must also be Media Center compliant. Windows XP tuners are not
compliant for Media Center. The Spec on the tuner must say for Media Center.

You also must have the Microsoft Media Center Remote control and IR
transceiver.

The IR transceiver controls the DirectTV box via a IR 'bug' that is pasted
over the IR receiver in the DirectTV box.

The Video Card in the older computer may need upgrading, TV requires a
minimum of 128 Megabytes of Video Memory and a pretty fast speed, You have
to update the video at 60 fields per second. (30 whole frames per second).

Yes, the technology works.
