Hi, I own a notebook without bluetooth or wireless facilities, although =
I have a pcmcia slot. My wife has just bought a notebook with both. We =
are both running Windows XP Pro. I'm posting to find out what I would =
need to do/buy to connect both notebooks (cable-free) to share files. We =
don't have a broadband connection but we may consider that in the =
future. We also have a desktop PC downstairs that we could link up also, =
but its mainly to share notebook files. Please excuse my ignorance but I =
know nothing about wireless connectivity.

Sincere thanks.

Its not lightening fast but just buy a Bluetooth dongle for yours, pair =
the two comps and use that for file transfer.

The range of bluetooth is extremely short (measured in feet or, at best,
tens of feet). You want to use WiFi instead. You could do it just a
WiFi 802.11 PC Card (802.11B or 802.11G), but it's probably better done
by using that plus a wireless router and setting up a more formal
network (including the desktop). A Wireless network PC Card (and "PC
Card" is the correct terminology, not "PCMCIA card") is about $29, a
wireless router is about $39. However, on rare occasion, you can get
kits with both items for $19 to $29 after rebates.

Barry,
I have a similar question. What would one need to just copy the
entire contents of one laptop to another laptop. Would a cable
between the serial ports and a null modem be able to do this, or
is there a better way?

Serial cable connections are going to be really slow. If both
machines have network ports, get a crossover cable for really
high-speed connectivity.

[Note that "entire contents" may not mean what you think it means, do
you want to clone the hard disk to replace a machine with another
identical one, or just move data files to a new machine?]
