Can the keys be popped-off from a Compaq Presario x1000 Notebook's
keyboard in order to remove debris stuck beneath them?

Probably.
Have you first tried holding notebook upside down at a 45 degree angle,
and rubbing fingers over the keyboard?
Repeat so that you do this with it leaning forward, backward, left and right.
Then vacuum in all these orientations.

Thanks, Ian. No, I haven't tried any of those techniques yet. I'll give
it a whirl. I'm a little uneasy with the idea of prying the key off the
board. What if I break it? Don't even want to go there. ;-)
