I have a Cingular 8125 that was connected to a laptop running Windows
Vista Business 32-bit. It had been working fine with Windows Mobile
Device Center up until about a week ago. After that, every time the
phone is plugged in it is not recognized.

Depending on which port the phone is plugged into, Windows detects the
phone as "Generic RNDIS" and then eventually installs it as "Microsoft
Windows Mobile Remote Adapter #x".

I followed one suggestion to remove all references to "usb_rndisy"
from the registry, but there are no references to that in the
registry. Another suggestion was to uninstall Windows Mobile Device
Center, install and run CCleaner (removing old dll files and registry
entries), then installing Windows Mobile Device Center again but that
didn't work.

I have tried different USB cables, uninstalling and re-installing
Windows Mobile Device Center, but still get the same behavior. The
phone does charge while plugged in via the USB cable and an Ipod
plugged into the same port works (which confirms that the port is OK).

I do have Norton Internet Security 2008 installed, but I got the same
behavior described above even with the firewall portion of Norton
turned off.

Try this- Start/Settings/Connections(Tab)/USB-to-PC and uncheck the "Enable
Advanced Network Functionality" box, then try to sync.

I do not have a "USB-to-PC" option in that menu.

The Device Information on the phone says:

ROM version: 2.25.11.1 WWE
ROM date: 5/11/06
Radio version 02.25.11
Protocol version: 4.1.13.12

It is running Windows Mobile Version 5.0 OS 5.1.195 (Build
14928.2.2.0)

Weird- the USB-to-PC option was added in the 2.xx.xx ROMs, IIRC. My T-
Mobile MDA (the T-Mo version of the 8125) didn't have it with the original
ROM but accquired it when I upgraded to 2.24.

Hi,
Did you update the USB drivers? The updated drivers are part of the
optional components for Vista.
