Carphone Warehouse holding back SPV? David Wright 12-14-2005

I don't know if this is their official line, but the Store Manager at my
local Carphone Warehouse (UK) told me tonight that they only plan to stock
the Orange SPV C600 if there is proven interest and sales in it from Orange
directly, and other retailers, first.

Also, they believe that the SPV are niche phones and too
complicated/non-standard for Nokia/Ericsson junkies that make up 90% of
their market.

This is why they stopped selling the C500 after 2 months, and didn't bother
with the C550 at all. Decision on the C600 won't be taken until after
Christmas...

This is from the UK's largest mobile phone retailer, at least in terms of
high-street stores if not value of sales.

Why does this affect me? I like to buy from Carphone Warehouse to take
advantage of the clause in their Lifeline insurance that allows you to break
the contract at any time, not having to wait for 12 months. Not aware of
anyone else who offers this.

Just buy one from www.orange.co.uk.
I've just received mine and it blows away the C500. The screen clarity
and resolution has to be seen to be believed. I think the case is a
little less robust that the previous one but the buttons are a lot
better. The joystick is far superior to that horrible rocker on the
C500.
The unlocking mechanism has changed (left soft key then * as opposed to
#).
As for the majority phone manufacturers, I'm happy that the SPV are
considered to be 'niche' phones. I'm an individual not a lemming. My
colleague has got a new Nokia phone to replace his C500. It's an
absolute joke. Can't remember the model but it's top of the range.
Looks like an ironing board with a screen and some keys to me! Plus,
the home screen layout is fixed. He regretted the purchase from day
one and now he's seen the C600 he regrets it even more.

According to
http://shop.orange.co.uk/shop/show/handsets/pay_monthly/orange/all it's
free.

The instruction to "just buy one" from the last poster, however, ignores why
I want to buy it from Carphone Warehouse.

So I may wait a while, myself.
