I am not able to open some email attachments on my smartphone. I have
a Windows Mobile 5 smartphone using Exchange ActiveSync to get email.
Email server is Exchange 2003. We receive faxes in our email as TIFF
file attachments. The attachment file name on the phone shows up with
quotes: "FILE.TIF"

When I try to open the attachment on the phone, it gives me the error:

Error
Unable to display the attachment.

Using Outlook on my PC, the attachment shows up as: "FILE.TIF".TIF

If I open the file in Outlook on my PC, save the TIF file, and send it
to myself as an attachment, it shows up as FILE.TIF (without quotes)
on my phone (and in Outlook on the PC) and I am able to open it and
view it. So there is no problem viewing the file on the phone. It
seems to be some problem with the way the attachment is named. I have
tried this on two different phones (Blackjack and Q, both WM5) with
the same result.

Any ideas as to how I can open these attachments on my phone?

TIF files need a third party software to be opened in Windows Mobile.

The problem is that most of free software packages that read TIF read only
single-page TIFFs, and these files usually come multi-paged. So we need to
refer to commercial software.

In my opinion, the best valued software in this area is RESCO Photo viewer
from www.resco.net . It will open the files you need easily.

Best regards,

Helio
