Cannot sync with 2 PCs esackbauer 08-05-2007

Hello,

I try to sync my new WM6 device with the PCs at work (XP, AS 4.5) and
home (Vista, WMDC 6.1).

What works without problem with my old WM2003SE device is now a
problem for the new WM6.
Whenever I go to the options of Activesync and try to check the 2nd PC
also for syncing contacts, calendar and tasks, i get the error "You
can only sync one source"

I tried this then with a WM5 device, the same happened.
I removed the partnerships from the device and both computers (even
did regedit), and recreated the partnerships. Still doesnt work.
Tried to sync only between my old home PC with XP and work PX, does
not work.

Regards,
Mundl

Hi,
You can only sync with one host if you sync with Exchange using Exchange
ActiveSync. Also, you can only sync with one PC if you sync Inbox.

Hi Chris,

today I hard resetted my device, and deleted all partnerships on both PCs.
Then I connected with my XP PC and the AS4.5 wizard for establishing a
partnership came up.
At first question, if I want to sync with Exchange server, I unchecked this.
At second question, what to sync: Took all options except email and Media.
Initial sync did work correctly.
Went to 2nd PC, but when WMDC sets up the new partnership, the options for
contacts, calendar and tasks were already grey, so I could not choose to
sync them ("Is already synced with 'Windows PC'").

As I found out I am by far not the only one with this problem. It seems
nobody has a solution.
I am really desperate now, because I work a lot from home, so its essential
for me to have my appointments at my home Outlook also.

Regarding Inbox, it can be synced with only 1 PC, but that does not affect
calendar, contacts and task sync. At least it didnt on my WM2003SE device.

Regards
Mundl

Just for grins- and perhaps find the bug, what happens if you uncheck the
e-mail box in AS on the device (stop synching e-mail)? Are you then
allowed to synch calendar, contacts, etc. with the second PC? (I'm
wondering if the bug checks for a previous e-mail-synched PC then
roadblocks all PIM data in error.)

If deactivating e-mail synching works, at least you could work around
that (just recreate your POP/IMAP accounts on the PPC. I've never
personally found off-line e-mail synching to be a very satisfying
experience.)

Depending on your desperation level, you could toss money at the problem-
1&1.com offers hosted Exchange service for $7/month, IIRC. You could set
your calendar up on that, which would automatically keeps both PCs and
the PPC in sync at all times. (Not ideal, but it's an option.)

You're right- this certainly sounds like a bug, and a big one at that!

Good luck!

I have had this issue since WM5. It is not solely linked to just syncing
with Exchange, as I have never done that. I do however sync one of my PCs
with Exchange, and that seems to be contributory. I worked this issue with
MS early on and they just never seemed to be able to duplicate it, so I just
gave up. I also got a new job where I couldn't take my electronics, so my
personal need disappeared.

For reference, in my case, if you partnered with two devices, the PIM items
would only allow syncing with one of the PCs. I felt this was by design as
there was a dialog box specifically indicating you could not sync contacts
(for example) because it was already being sync'd with PC1. I felt some
coder wrote that dialog, and MS indicated they wouldn't know why, because
you shouldn't have that problem. Yea, right. In my case I could uncheck one
PC syncing a particular item and check that item on the other PC. Just one
at a time though, never both.

So, it is not an anomaly. It is a real bug, and an issue IMHO, but I went
for several months trying to champion it with no resolution. Not having a
very active Don Quixote gene, I gave up.
