I bought myself a brand new smartphone at the weekend, my first ever
PPC/WM device, having been a Palm T3 user for the last couple of
years. It is the MDA Vario, also known as the i-mate K-Jam and Qtek
9100 plus several other rebadges.
Everything is really good except I cannot get the thing to connect to
my home network in 802.11g mode. It will connect without problem if I
permit mixed b/g mode or b only mode.
The Vario can see my network and knows it has WPA-PSK security
enabled. When I try to connect it tries for a few seconds but instead
of becoming "connected" it simply remains "available".
I have tried shortening my WPA-PSK key
I have tried running WEP 128bit instead of WPA
I have tried running no encryption at all
I have disabled MAC filtering
I have tried channel numbers 1, 3, 11, 13
I have tried 3 different router firmwares
I have hard reset the router and re-input settings from scratch
The Vario will connect in b or b/g mode in all of the above scenarios.
It will not connect in g mode to any of them.
Does anyone have any idea what is wrong? As this is my first
experience of PPC/WM5 I don't really know what I can do to fix things
at the Vario end of the link - probably not much since the software is
all in ROM and there is no "Windows Update" facility that I have
found.
My Vario is from T-Mobile UK and here is the Device Information
WM5 OS 5.1.70 (Build 14406.1.1.1)
ROM version : 1.3.2.2 ENU
ROM date : 0/29/05
Radio version : 01.04.10
Protocol version : 4.0.13.17
ExtROMversion : 1.3.2.102
Is there anything there that might point to the cause of the problem?
I have installed no software except that supplied by T-Mobile and that
was limited to SPB GPRS Monitor.
Thanks for any ideas.
p.s. When looking for software for this device what type of software
should I be looking for? Is it PPC software? Is it Smartphone
software? Is it either or both? The Windows Mobile website seems
completely hopeless. WM5 barely gets a mention. ActiveSync 4.0 was
supplied with the device but the MS website seems more interested in
3.8? Isn't that a bit "last century"? I admit I'm a bit confused by
the various OS naming conventions. With Palm it was pretty simple -
you just picked hi-res or lo-res versions of the software to fit your
hardware. PPC/WM/Smartphone seems far less clear cut.
Cheers,
Tim.
