I have posted the following information in another thread. But I think =
I should start a new one for this is probably more suitable to get =
others' attention.
My Pocket PC (Cingular 8125 -- Windows Mobile 5) shows last sync'ed on =
12/9/2007. Before that, it was OK for more than a year. Since then I =
have not been able to sync it to my desktop computer -- Windows XP, a =
Dell Dimension 9100. The sync to my other PC with a fresh install of =
ActiveSync 4.5 is fine. But my work are on this computer. I like to be =
able to use this computer to sync with the PocketPC.
I have gone through almost all possible suggestions -- changing USB =
cable, uninstall/re-install ActiveSync 4.5, removing the partnership, =
changing Windows firewalls, etc. I have checked the USB port with my =
Canon camera and the port works fine. I am also a computer technical =
person.
Current symptom is:
1.. Connect the PocketPC to my computer, using USB cable=20
2.. ActiveSync asks for password (my PocketPC is password protected)=20
3.. Enter the password=20
4.. ActiveSync tries to retrieve settings=20
5.. ActiveSync reports and error -- Synchronization cannot be =
completed successfully. Reconnect your device and try again. If the =
problem persists, see the Microsoft ActiveSync Troubleshooter in =
Microsoft ActiveSync Help on your desktop computer.
When I use "Troubleshooter for ActiveSync" from the Help menu of the =
ActiveSync on my computer, the scanning of "TCP/IP Port 990 Scan" is in =
the Running status forever.
My PocketPC says it's connected but ActiveSync says not.
Any help will be appreciated.

ActiveSync on the PC and ActiveSync on the device communicate, when you plug
in the USB cable, via TCP/IP, that is, network protocols. It's quite
possible to change a setting on your firewall, virus detection software,
etc., and prevent ActiveSync from being able to communicate with the device
enough to complete a sync. Most sudden "unable to sync" problems come from
this sort of thing. There are certainly other possibilities, but this is
the most likely and easiest to solve. If you've just change a firewall
setting, unchange it. If you've just installed a new virus scanning piece
of software, allow ActiveSync to pass its scan. If you've just started
using a new secure network, VPN, etc., consult the documentation or your
network administrator to see what you need to do to have another network
adapter plugged into your PC while the VPN is connected, without causing
either network problems. There may also be a setting for using Advanced
Network Services (this is in ActiveSync *on the device*). If this is the
problem, that setting must be on. You can try turning it off and seeing if
that will allow the connection to work.

Please log in for more thread options Paul,
Thank you for the information. In my knowledge, nothing has been changed.
Maybe something is changed on my system in Windows Updates without me
knowing it. I don't know
what it is.
I am using Windows firewall and Symantec Anti-Virus 10. Both have been used
longer than the problem started to occur. I don't use VPN on my computer.
In Windows firewall, "Don't allow exceptinos" is un-checked. The following
programs are in the exception list. I even turn off Windows firewall and
still have the same error.
ActiveSync Application
ActiveSync Connection Manager
ActiveSync RAPI Manager
ActiveSync Service

Please log in for more thread options Are you in a corporate environment? Perhaps the IT guys have pushed a
change down to your PC that is affecting this. If it were me, I'd first
check for the Advanced Network functionality on the device. If that setting
is not present (it's not on all devices), I'd uninstall Symantec completely
and try again. It's also possible that some other network program is
capturing that port and ActiveSync can't get it. I can't tell you,
specifically, what to look for, however.
