 I'm using outlook 2002 in internet-only mode. I have my old emails saved in a
archive.pst file. Usually I don't want to have this open in outlook, because
it then gets a new file date every day and then needs to be copied in the
nightly incremental backup. Is it possible to have this indexed in a
read-only mode?

BruceBrad, I am in the same boat. If you find out the answer, could you let
me know? Meanwhile, I'll continue looking for an answer and will do the same.

The short answer is no. In order for a PST to be indexed it has to be
active in Outlook.

The long answer is (to the best of my knowledge) that the indexer uses a
MAPI interface to access this information through Outlook. So if the file
isn't in the outlook tree, the indexer A) can't touch it and B) doesn't know
about it.

I tried the following. I opened my archive.pst in outlook, then rebuilt the
index. I then closed the archive.pst file. I then searched for an item in the
archive file. It appeared in the index. Clicking on it popped up the request
for my archive password - working just as I needed. BUT, when I came back to
my computer after lunch, I could no longer find the items in the archive
file. The index had 'tidied itself up' and removed the pointers to the now
closed archive.pst file.

So, all that is needed is for the program to not remove index pointers to
files that are closed but no longer accessible. Could this be included as a
feature on future versions?
