Toshiba Satellite (L20 series) came with one 256MB DDR2 stick. Can I
simply add a 512MB DDR2 stick in the other slot, or are there certain
rules that must be followed?

Also, just curious, could you place a DDR stick into a DDR2 slot? If
so, could one slot have a DDR and the other slot a DDR2?

DDR2 must be matched pairs as in 2 X 256 or 2 X 512, and so on. While I am
not 100% certain, I believe that you can not mix the DDR and DDR2 types.

You cannot mix ddr and ddr2; in fact, if the machine is made for ddr2,
as far as I know you can't install ddr at all, mixed or not.

If you machine supports dual channel memory, you would probably get more
performance from two (matched) 256 meg modules operating in dual channel
mode than from one 512 and one 256. Yes, the 512+256 would have more
memory, but it would not operate in the faster dual channel mode, but
rather in the slower single-channel mode.

If they are the same class it won't matter.
I upgraded the my HP laptop having a two 256 MB DDR sticks by
replacing one with 512 MB DDR and its works better and faster.
But I would not recommend blending two different ( single and dual
)channel memory stick

DDR and DDR2 are not "single and dual channel" memory. They are totally
different types of memory ... as different as SDRAM and DDR. Not only
can you not mix them, but as far as I know, a machine made for one
(either one) won't take the other, at all, period.
