CIW Certification, worth doing? Amos E Wolfe 02-16-2008

I have been in contact with a training provider who offer courses that lead
to CIW Certification on passing. They say it is an "industry standard".

I have been involved in web design since around 1996, starting with the
usual "home pages" full of animated gifs and background music. I have now
happily grown out of these things and use HTML strict, CSS, and some php.

During this time I have always done web design and related stuff part-time
but would like to concentrate more on this in the future. Do employers and /
or customers know about / recognise the CIW generally?

And at a cost of around £3000, is it worth the money?

No.

No.

It _might_ be worth someone else's money, if there's nothing better
they might spend it on. OTOH, =A3100 on a handful of the right books and
a week off to seriously study is a much better way to spend that
sort of cash.

Actually Andy it was! Evidently that wretched GG interface flubs valid
signatures both coming and going!

Take care,

I never heard of 'em. As far as I know there is no such widely
organization certifying organization for web design/development skills.
What I am or am not aware of isn't the determining factor, but I don't
see how this is different from any organization coming up with a set of
assessments and then claiming that they are the gold standard.

It seems to me that this says it all:

http://www.ciwcertified.com/casestudies/

"Case Studies - CIW works in close collaboration with academic
institutions, learning centers and corporations to provide solutions to
meet their Web-related curriculum and training needs. Learn more about
the results and benefits of how CIW has been a solution to challenges
and needs of Web-training providers." And this is followed by ... TWO
case studies. One is the University of Paisley in Scotland and the other
is Niceville High School in Niceville, Florida. These are the *best*
they can come up with?

As far as I know they have worthwhile training materials, and using them
may provide you with a structured curriculum that will be better than
picking up knowledge piecemeal. But this is a different matter from
providing world-recognized certification.
