With all that is going on regarding RIM and the possible discontinue of
service for US customers what do you all feel is a viable alternative. From
what I have seen activesync really does not provide constant wireless
synchronization with Outlook like the Blackberry Enterprise Server allows.
Maybe I have just not read enough on these. Anyway, with this looming I
figure it would be better to look into other options than waiting to see if
the Blackberry US service will be shut down. Thanks for your input!

Microsoft have released SKU 2.0 WM5 to the OEMs, this provides constant
'Push' email technology similar to Blackberry, ROM updates for devices
will start trickling out for the the current and new WM5 devices in the
next few months. Just now the WM5 devices let you Pull down email every
5 minutes and send email immediately. Unless there is a pressing need
to have the mail in a closer time frame I would say this would suffice
until SKU2.0 ROMs start appearing. Furthermore, SKU will use Activesync
over http/s so configuring it just will only make life easier.

And at the end of the day you dont waste money on blackberry server and
blackberry devices.

This link:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/business/strategy/exchangemobilemessaging.mspx
has more information on how to set up the Exchange end, so that you are
ready for the AKU2.0 devices.

Don't forget, for AKU2.0 and Push e-mail: Your Front End Server will need to
be running Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2 - you do NOT need to upgrade all the
Back-end servers.

Also: Your ISA Server or other Firewall will need a timeout default of 1800
seconds (30 minutes) or so - the reason for this is that the Push Model
needs the SSL connection to stay open (but not using data) for >15 minutes.

Other than that, there is no other infrastructure set-up or on-going cost
required.

Before the AKU2.0 devices become available later this quarter:

- You can use Sync every 5 minutes. But if you don't get much e-mail it
will be setting up the sync connection many times without doing anything.

- You can make use of AUTD - Always Up To Date. This uses SMS messages to
send to the device telling it that there is new mail waiting, and the device
then does a Sync. If you receive lots of e-mail, this could be expensive on
SMS messages.

Cheers, Chris
