I assure you that hosts file is intended to block spyware.
A large percentage of spyware is related to advertizing sites, which is why
a list of known spyware and adware sites would contain a lot of advertizing
web sites. Maybe you're thinking of things like keystroke logger Trojans as
being spyware, which are not exactly what I would classify as spyware.
