Hi folks,

setup is as follows:
Windos XP SP2 (+all patches), WM5-device T-Mobile MDA Vario II (aka HTC
TyTN), connection via USB.

AS 4.2 worked fine.
After upgrading to 4.5 by just installing AS 4.5 over the existing
installation without changing anything else I keep getting: "Synchronization
cannot be completed successfully. Reconnect your device and try again. If
the problem persists, see the Microsoft ActiveSync Troubleshooter in
Microsoft ActiveSync Help on your desktop computer." [OK] after connecting
the WM5-device to my PC via USB.

BTW when watching the installation I also noticed a "RNDIS Hotfix" being
installed.

Now if I press that OK-button AS 4.5 displays my device's name, shows the
status as "Connected" and "Synchronization error" with a small white cross
in a red circle on the greyed out AS-logo on the right side of the window.
I can "Explore" my device and see everything on it, but it won't sync.
Also FlexWallet on my desktop cannot connect to its counterpart on the
WM5-device, therefore none of the circulating Outlook-API-myths can be the
source and/or solution to this problem.

I used the AS Troubleshooter and the "Detailed log file" shows the following
interesting entries:
"Pinging Device 169.254.2.2 started
Pinging - IcmpCreateFile failed, err = 11010
nable to establish a connection between the PC and the device. Get
up-to-date solutions to common connection problems. Please click the
following link:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=65257
The device appears to be disconnected. Please connect your device to the
PC."

I disabled everything firewall-ish on the PC (Windows firewall for that
network device, Norton Personal Firewall from Nortin Internet Security (NIS)
2007 completely) but still ran into the same error.
I manually enabled all relevant applications and ports I could google (990,
999, 5621, 5678, 26675) both for TCP and UDP, both incoming and outgoing,
both remote and local on NIS 2007 but still ran into the same error.

Dear Microsoft, why on earth can't you just release _working_ software and
don't expect us to do your work every single time you release something?
This costs our time, our money and our energy and yet it is still us paying
you and not the other way round. I've never had anything like that happen
during the last fifteen years - when I was using Psion/Symbian- and
Palm-devices. And even worse, I just recommended WM5 over Symbian (Nokia) to
one of our biggest customers...

The error definitely has something to do with any of the changes resulting
from the upgrade from AS 4.2 to AS 4.5 since everything worked perfectly
before. And we have this error on every single PC, so it is reproducible -
and a _really_ *BIG* problem for us.

Do you have any ideas/suggestions where to look next or what to do next?

Regards,
Mike

Hi,
Did you try deleting any existing partnership and then try synchronizing?

Thanks to your post I did and it misteriously worked.

So a BIG "Thank you!" to you Chris, you definitely saved my day! :-)

Why on earth would a company like MS not be able to write software that is
able to take care about things like that by itself? I've never ever had to
do anything like that with any of the Psions, Nokias, Siemens', Sony
Ericssons, Palms or you name it.

Hi,
Here's the idea. It should not delete the partnership but it should tell
you that there already is a partnership on the PC in that name and ask you
if you have other devices that you sync with the PC or not. Then based on
the response it should delete the partnerships if you have no other devices.

If they followed this approach it would avoid the problem for users that
only have one device - which is the most users.
