Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me a good place to get white papers
with best practices for new network administrators? Some sort of guide for
newbie Admins.

Thanks much,

-David

I will assume you mean a Windows admin when you say
"network administrators" (rather than such as the Cisco guy).
There are "short cut" sites, etc. but I believe that people need
to think in order to be a good Windows admins, rather than
just follow recommendations and step-by-step guides (not that
these do not have a place and usefulness).
So I would steer you toward
www.microsoft.com/technet/security/guidance
www.reskits.com
www.microsoft.com/technet/solutionaccelerators
www.microsoft.com/mof

Hi Roger,

Haha, yes, I do mean Windows admins. :)

I am an MCSE-trained Network Admin, but I'm the sole IT guy for the company,
and sometimes I feel like I'm floating out here alone, without anyone to
confer with, or to say "There's a better way to do this..." or "You missed
this step", and what I was thinking of was some sort of source that I could
use to double-check myself, and see if I was overlooking anything.

I know that probably sounds a little weird, but, I'd like to know "how I'm
doing", and what I could do better. Sometimes, that's a little hard to do
when you're "The Guy", and don't have anyone to bounce ideas off of.

Thanks much!

-David

Hi David,

Yep, I understand. Sometimes it doesn't even help when
there is an ear around to bounce off of as one just bounces
off of it <g> But I do hear what you are saying.
The problem with step-by-steps are that they seem to need
to aim at the 80% case, which may not be what one has,
and even if it is there may still be other aspects of the
deployed environment or its planned future that make a
variation on the step-by-step a better idea.
Sorry, but due to that I do not have a list of favorite sites
that I would recommend in general, although there are
quite a few very good ones.
Keep in mind that there are quite a few "how-to" articles
in the MS KB (if one can find them), and the newsgroups
are always here (quite a few post "this: a, b, c is what I am
planning on. is there something overlooked, or a better way?)
And, of course Google is a big help - after locating and
comparing a couple 1,2,3s and then digging a little into
the resource kit / KBs one can often build a fairly complete
picture.
