Hello, I have what is probably a basic tuner set up question.... I'm
considering the possibility of switching from my cable company's HD DVR to a
home built one (assuming I can get my hands on a cable card tuner and
TimeWaner supports it :P). This is not a "I'm going to do it tomorrow" thing
as much as a general curiosity type of thing.... Anyway, what I wanted to
know is how does Media Center deal with having multiple different types of
tuners installed in the same box... Basically if I did this I what I would
really want is a single "media server" so to speak capable of serving up
DVRed TV to all the TV's in my home, using x-box 360 (core) systems as kind
of a set top box so to speak. So there would be a mix of HD/non-HD tv's on
the network, as well as a desire to be able to switch between HD-Digital
cable and free air HD (as despite the fact that I have 100 "HD" channels it
seems like I might not have all the locals... go figure :P).

One, you will not be able to go out and buy a CableCard tuner. They are only
sold with pre-built Digital Cable Ready certified PC's. You can add OTA
HDTV tuners to this setup and use them, as well as the cable card tuner, if
I recall correctly.

Interesting, any idea how the system handles this set up as far as the
program guide etc? Are all tuners viewed as equal? Or does it maintain
seperate guides for each tuner allowing you to choose between the two? Very
sad to hear about the cable card situation, that is about what I expected to
be honest, though the bit about a digital cable ready PC was supprise, is
this something one could get from the likes of dell? Perhaps buying prebuilt
and modifying would be good enough (I've been building my own strictly since
1996, but oh well..)

I haven't tried this setup, as I get all my local HD channels via cable.
However, the OTA HD channels should be handled just like they are in MCE
2005. They're added to the Guide in the 2xxx range (IIRC).

As for specific offererings from Dell or other vendors, I can't say. There
are a number of vendors with Cable Card ready machines. Dell's XPS 410 is
supposed to be available with the ATI DCT, but I didn't see where to add it
as an option.

I have for what is worth, I send my Digital Cable box signal through S-Video
and Digital Audio (channels in the hundreds), and since I dont pay for HD
service, I GeT my HD channels free OTA via coaxial antenna Input(channel # in
the thousands) and I only see one guide, pretty neat; however Media Center
apparently can't recognize two Audio inputs at once. I hear the audio from
the coaxial but not the one from the Digital audio so my DTV channels get
screwed.
