I've just upgraded to AS 4.5 and have not figured out out to activate the
back up options in the Tools menu (they remain light grey). Can anyone tell
me what's wrong? I've read somewhere that Microsoft discontinued backup
functionality in the latest release of AS. Can this be true? Thanks JCF

Hi,

This feature is no longer made available when devices running WM5.0 and
WM6.0 are connected. You wouldn't be even seeing it in its partnership
profile while using ActiveSync.

For older devices the option will remain grayed out until the device is
connected and synchronized. Upon completion of synchronization the option
should be available for use.

Hello,

So how do you backup your device prior to for example a ROM upgrade?

Since ROM upgrades usually change the OS, restoring a priot OS
backup is generally not a particularly good idea. (Picture restoring
a Win 98 registry to XP, or an XP registry to Vista!)

Even without backup software much of your PPC is "backed up."
Everytime you sync, you've backed up your PIM data and your My
Documents files. If you install all of your apps using
Activesync/WMDC on the desktop those are essentially backed up as
well (meaning they'll reinstall easily- their in-program settings
aren't.)

So, even after a hard-reset, the next time you sync, you're 90% back-
add any POP/IMAP e-mail accounts, connection settings, user
preferences (backlight, standby timers, etc.) and you've recovered
from a disaster without a "backup."
