I'd suggest a third-party application such as Acronis True Image, which
is now in version 9 (I have 8, myself).
It can back up from Windows or a boot CD that it lets you create. It
supports restore from the boot CD (duh!). The boot CD supports external
drives, unlike some older versions of various programs I have used.
IIRC, it can image your current drive onto a new drive if you are
upgrading your drive or if you fear the old one is failing.
There are other apps as well, but I like this one. Naturally, YMMV.
Some fo the reasons I like it are features that the others didn't have,
but newer versions of them now have those features (example, the
ability to access an external drive from the boot CD). Check reviews on
the web at the usual sites, whatever that means :-)
