Means you have hardware issues
Is the laptop actually compatible with Vista?
It seems you currently have win2k installed

Yep
No laptop that came with win2k could possibly run Vista in any
acceptable manner

An exact model number would be helpful.
Blue Screen during the Windows install generally point to a faulty RAM
module.
I would try this first:
http://www.memtest86.com/
Have you also tried setting the BIOS to factory defaults.
Reseating the the DVD Drive, Ram modules, and any other components.
What is the condition of the install DVD. A nick in the right place
would cause consistent failure and blue screens on the same files.
