I have a client (product development, not website development)
who has a low volume site (a hundred hits a day on a single
static 64K HTML page) but who needs maximum reliability and
minimum downtime.

Who has the most reliable hosting service? I am looking for
a provider with multiple data centers in different locations
and a monitoring system that will switch over the site if a
hurricane or earthquake hits one of the data centers.

Yes, I am aware of redundant DNS -- that's how I got involved
in this discussion with the client in the first place -- but
I also know that you should start with the most reliable hosting
service you can find before rolling your own DNS fallback scheme.

Cost is not important. He does use .htaccess but nothing else
-- no php, no ssl, no https, just a plain vanilla website.
He prefers a dedicated IP address, not shared hosting, Apache,
not IIS, and BSD or Linux with a slight preference for BSD,
not Windows.

Suggestions?

Take a look at ServerGrade.

They have servers in the U.S as well as Australia.

Consider Green IT: http://www.gruene-it.de/ (German, I’m afraid). I’m with
biohost.de and he’s a very nice and helpful
person…
