Are certain file-types permanently excluded from index? Robax 06-09-2005

I have files with the extension .res that I need to index. Adding them to the
list of files to index as text does not get them indexed. .res files are not
on the visible exclude list in the options so it should work.

My best guess is that the search excludes certain file-types permanently. I
note that .tmp files are also not on either the include nor exclude list and
they do not get indexed. .res and .tmp files are of course Windows system
files and normally of no value to the search, however, .res is an extremely
common extension used in many other applications, especially scientific ones
and I have tens of thousands of them that I need to be able to index.

Can someone from MS confirm this and perhaps suggest a workaround that does
not involve renaming all my files to something else?

Otherwise this is certainly an excellent tool.

Regards,
Rob

I can see that ".res" is in the exclusion list in the indexing advanced
options ( though as you said "temp" is not listed in either in inclusion/
exclusion list), you can remove this from here and add in "Index file types
as text" and do "Index Now" , then all your *.res files will be indexed using
text IFIlter.

I looked for res in that box a couple of times but somehow must have been
blind that evening. Anyhow, that should get it working fine.

Thank you very much for the response.

Rob

(It also took me about a month to find my way back to where I even made that
post.... I spent ages digging around the MSND newsgroups for it. I reckon
there needs to be a link from the Searchtool help to the newsgroup)
