Most of the ice seems to be in the polar regions, which makes good
sense if we assume that the poles are colder than the equator. But it
is thought that Mars nutates so sometimes the tilt of its axis is much
greater than it is now. When that happens, the sun is high in the sky
for months on end during the summer at each pole, which should raise
the surface temperature considerably higher than at the equator. The
existence of buried ice under these conditions seems improbable.
Apparently, much remains to be discovered...
