Hi, I hope I am at the right place...

I have used computers for a long time but as they've gotten more
sophisticated, I've been left behind as far as technical knowledge goes so
please forgive me if this sounds "stupid"

Last night, I worked on my computer (mainly Word & Excel). Everything was
fine. When I shut it down, it said it was going to be doing its automatic
download and install. Fine. That happened.

Now, today, neither Word nor Excel work - they will not let me open or save
a file. I uninstalled and reinstalled Office (2003). No change.

What I believe the problem is - somehow - that Explorer has been corrupted
or something. (The Explorer that looks at the hard drive, etc. - not IE) I
thought I'd uninstall Windows XP Professional and reinstall but the disk says
I'm going to cause all sorts of programs to no longer work because the
original program is from 2002 and, obviously, there have been numerous
updates since then - notably SP2.

First, did anyone else experience problems after last night's update
service? And second, any ideas how I can fix the darn thing? Uncle Sam is
going to be upset with me if I don't get those taxes done for him in time!!!

Thanks a million for any help anyone can give me.

Hi Donna,

It's not exactly the right place (this is the Media Center newsgroup) -- but
my first step would be to use System Restore. If you don't have System
Restore activated, try reversing the update in "Add/Remove Programs).

Check this out - it answers your question.

I too had problems and uninstalled the update mentioned in the above
article. The other updates worked fine.
