Hello everyone,

>From reading previous posts, it sounds like syncing over bluetooth is
tricky. I apologise if this post is just adding to the noise.

On the off-chance that someone has solved the problem I am having, here
it is:

I'm trying to synchronise my i-mate SP3i (aka HTC Feeler, Qtek 8020,
Dopod 575, Vodafone VDA, or O2 Xphone II) with my Outlook 2003 over a
bluetooth connection. I have an HP Compaq nx8220 laptop running Windows
XP Pro Service Pack 2. Activesync is version 4.2, and everything works
fine using the USB cable. Also, bluetooth works ok for other purposes
(file transfer, headset), although it is a little slow to connect.

I followed the instructions in the Activesync help to connect via
bluetooth, but when I tell the phone to connect, I get a "Port not
available" error on the phone (Error. Cannot connect to PC. Close other
programs that might be using the connection and try again).

I've tried various combinations of settings on the phone and the PC,
but I always get the same error. I'm guessing that part of the problem
is that I don't really understand the whole COM port thing, and trying
to figure out COM ports and Activesync and Bluetooth all at the same
time is too much for me.

If anyone can help me, please do. If I have left out any crucial bits
of info, I'll answer any questions you have.

Thanks, Simon.

Just how and where are you telling the phone to connect? It sounds almost as
if you are not telling the phone to connect correctly.

Hi David,

I open Activesync in my phone, choose "menu", then "Connect via
Bluetooth". After about five seconds, the phone says "Port not
available...". There is no hint from the PC that the phone is trying to
connect.

Since the error is about ports, perhaps I should list the info I can
find about ports on my phone and PC.

According to the Bluetooth settings on my phone, it has two COM ports.
One has the same name as the PC I am trying to sync with, and is
labeled COM7. The other is called Incoming Port, and is labeled COM6. I
can edit both ports - the options are COM number (6 or 7), and Secure
Connection (checkbox). I can also add a new outgoing port to any of the
other Bluetooth devices that my phone is paired with. The options for
new ports are the same as for existing ports.

In the Bluetooth settings on my computer, there is too much to feasibly
fit into this post. Basically, I think I have an incoming Bluetooth COM
port on COM9 (Options are COM9 or COM16, start automatically, and
secure connection - both ticked). I also seem to have an outgoing port
on COM11 (options are COM11 or COM16, and secure connection - ticked).

In Activesync's connection settings, I have ticked "Allow connections
from:", and chosen COM9 from the list - the number of the incoming port
on the PC. Other options on the list are COM4, COM10, COM11, COM12, and
Infrared.

I hope I haven't scared you off.

-Simon

Ok this is correct and it sounds as if you have connected to your nx8220 at
one time? Or have you connected to another computer to get the Bluetooth
option in ActiveSync? WM5 uses COM ports in a different way than previous
version did, COM Ports are not reusable under WM5. So you basically need to
create a new COM port for each Bluetooth device you connect to using serial
ports.

Are you watching the ActiveSync icon and the Bluetooth icon on the Taskbar?

I believe it may have to do with the limited COM ports on your WM 5 device.

How many Bluetooth serial devices do you actually have connected to this
computer? Generally COM ports are assigned in increasing order, so the
newest is the highest. When was your Pocket PC partner to your Laptop?

As far as I know, the "Connect via Bluetooth" option in Activesync has
always been there. I have never been able to connect to any computer
using this option, but I can use bluetooth in other ways, and I can
sync just fine using USB.

There are only two Bluetooth ports on my device. One is the incoming
port, and the other (outgoing) has the name of my NX8220. The port
numbers are different.

When the phone is trying to connect, the PC activesync icon stays grey,
and the bluetooth icon stays white. Green would be good, but I can't
get any.

I'll try to answer this as best I can. Just for clarity, as I
understand it, the serial port is one service that a bluetooth device
can provide to another device. Other services are things like headset,
business card exchange, etc, and these are not the same as bluetooth
serial. Is this correct?

I have paired two other devices with my laptop in the past - a non-WM
phone, and another laptop. I didn't use the serial service on either
device. Neither of these two devices is currently connected to my
laptop - the only device I am working with is my current phone. My
phone is currently paired with my laptop, and I can use the other
bluetooth services I described, but can't get activesync to connect via
bluetooth.
