Activesync duplicates inbox items when using VPN. br 08-08-2005

When I sync my SMT5600 (Mobile 2003 SE Smartphone) over VPN to my desktop
Outlook 2003 (no exchange involved) it creates duplicates. The duplicate
items do not have anything in the FROM field on the desktop.

I have tried both active sync 3.7 and activesync 3.8.

I have tried deleting the partnership (and purging all references to it) and
then hard resetting the phone back to factory settings. Both of these have
made the problem worse in that this used to happen only once or twice a
week, and now it seems to happen on every sync.

It's really frustrating and it pretty much makes syncing email OTA useless -
which means I'm wasting $20 a month for unlimited access on the phone. I'm
starting to think I should have chosen Blackberry. :(

Anyone know how to fix this? I've searched and searched, and I've found
other people with similar problems, but none with a solution.
