I use a wireless connection on my laptop which works 99.9% flawlessly
without interruptions for many months. It connects on my wireless network
which consists of a router which uses channel 6 and an access point which
uses channel 11. I have AS 4.2 and have been using it to sync with my
i-mate ppc without any problems. I just changed phone and noticed the
following strange problem: As soon as I connect the new phone/pda to usb and
AS starts sync, my wifi connection drops and after a while a get "limited or
no connectivity", this happens because it stops the connection on the access
point which uses channel 11 and tries to connect to channel 6 which is far
away with very low signal.

Why could AS connection prohibit my laptop from using channel 11?

It's not a channel problem and a search of the archives will show you that
you're not the first, if my read of symptoms is correct. The thread was
called "ActiveSync Kills Wireless". If you change the security of your
nearby wireless network to something other than WPA, it shouldn't be a
problem, and some have had success getting the latest drivers or wireless
clients from Intel (I presume this is an Intel wireless chipset in your PC).

Basically, it's a bug in Intel's wireless chipset driver or in the wireless
client from Intel. When it sees what it interprets as an insecure network
connection (the USB connection to the device is a network connection), it
drops the WPA wireless connection to avoid contaminating the network (or
something).

Yes it's Intel but I have all the latest updates both for client and
adapter. I don't think it's the client because I've tried both the Intel and
Microsoft clients with the same results. It must be the adapter's problem.

However there is still a mystery. Why, didn't this problem ever happen with
my previous device? I was using the same computer with the same
configuration until yesterday and this never happened.

I don't think that changing WPA is an option though because this will lower
security.

Yes, not everyone was successful at getting a functional system in any way
other than reducing security on the wireless network. Some people did have
success changing clients, while others changed drivers. There was no one
right answer.

If the previous device was not a WM5 device, it never happened because the
WM5 device acts like a network adapter and previous devices acted like
specific USB devices that required special drivers and did *not* appear to
the system like additional network devices. Some WM5 devices have the
ability to act like the old-style devices, thus allowing them, I would
presume (my WM5 device does *not* have this option), to work around this
problem.

I just found a solution. From connection settings, disable the advanced
networking feature. Of course this will stop network via functionality
support but you can always sync via bluetooth as well.
