Activesync and Outlook Notes Stephan Bradley 06-15-2005

I have a common problem with syncronizing Outlook notes with my PPC. There
are many internet posts on how to fix it and all seem to involve some
variation of deleting files and syncing over and over. I have never seen
one that mentions an actual successful solution.

Has anyone actually ever spoken to, or met someone, who has resolved this
issue? I am beginning to think that it is an "Urban Legend" that this issue
is resolvable!

I started with a new HP iPaq rx3115 and a new installation on my desktop of
Outlook. Everything works perfect, except the notes. In my case, if I
create a note on my PC, all is well and in jumps right over to the PPC. If
I create a note on the PPC, Activesync doesn't seem to even notice that it
is there. I have no files to delete and re-sync, so this procedure doesn't
seem to have any effect on my set-up. So far, I have only created short
"test" notes.

If anyone has thoughts on this issue, I am open for discussion. Also, if
anyone knows about Franklin Covey's software (PlanPlus 3.0) that claims to
resolve all of these issues, I am interested in a review.

Thanks,
Stephan Bradley

I'm probably at least partially behind that "urban legend"

take a look at http://BevHoward.com/ASync.htm#Notes which dates back to
PPC 2000

As far as anyone having success, it worked for me and I would guess
about 50% of those I have pointed to the page who have responded back
have reported success.

As for the tool, I have not heard of it but would like to know if it works.

Beverly,

Thank you so much for you link and suggestions. I had in fact found that
page using Google and tried it already. I have no notes files on my iPaq.

I can create a note in Outlook on the PC and it will sync fine. If I am
away from the office and take a note on my iPaq (conversation with a
customer or something like that), then try to sync back at the office,
nothing happens. All other items will sync, but that new note created with
the Notes program on the iPaq is just not recognized by Activesync or it
can't see it.

Now, all of that being said, the Templates folder has the notes in it that
came pre-installed on the iPaq with Windows. Do I need to delete these as
well?

Thanks,
Stephan

That sounds like you are making a recording rather than a note... and
things depend on how you have notes set up.

Check the options in the notes file menu... notes and recordings on
storage cards will not sync and the existance of wav files in the sync
directory on the PC will also play into the equation.

Bit more info will help clear the fog such as how you have notes options
set and if they are located in ram or not.

OK,

I did some tests using your link as a guide. Here are some interesting
things:

1. If I move all of the notes templates (*.pwi files) off to an SD card and
take it out, then sync - all is well. I can create notes in Outlook and on
the iPaq and they sync fine.

2. If I move those templates back to the iPaq "Templates" folder on main
memory, they don't sync.

3. If I create a note using a template, it will not sync.

4. If I rename a note that was created with Outlook on the PC, then sync'd
to the iPaq, the next sync will delete the note from the PC (it seems to
think it is gone rather than renamed).

and finally, my set-up is:

Default Mode = Writing
Default Template = [blank]
Save to = Main Memory

With that set-up, I can create notes on the iPaq and they will sync fine as
long as I don't use a template and never rename a file (which seems to turn
it into a *.pwi file, which is not recognized by Activesync).

Now that is weird, but I can work with it...

Stephan
