After working fine for months I now get a 'sychronization error' whenever I
put my Dell Axim into its cradle connected via USB to my Windows XP PC. The
really weird thing is that appointments entered into the exchange server do
get correctly uploaded into the DELL and vice versa?

Any suggestions?

When was the last soft reset you did?
Have you tried upgrding to ActiveSync V4.2:

Is it erroring on the files sync? Or on other parts of the Exchange sync? Or
on the Outlook sync?

Do you have, or did you recently install a VPN client?
