ActiveSync won't, Need to Move Data mark.wolven 04-29-2008

Greetings,

I have an older (or maybe just old) Dell Axim. Mostly due to its age
(and design), some of the pins are broken or bent on the bottom of the
PDA where the PDA connects to its the sync cable and recharger. Oddly
enough, the PDA will recharge, but it's been awhile since I've been
able to sync the PDA with a desktop. It will not sync via IR either.
The Dell Axim sports the Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition version
4.2.1.

Now, I've purchased a new smartphone - the T-Mobile Wing with Windows
Mobile 6 Professional.

The Dell comes with a program called "Data Backup" which allowed me to
create a backup of my contacts and appointments in a ".bdk" file; The
new device doesn't have that software. And I'm pretty sure that Dell
is out of the PDA business.

How can I move my contacts and calendar items from the Dell to the
Wing? Are there any suggestions from the smart folks here - keep in
mind that because of the sync cable issues, I don't think I can
install new software on the Dell.

This I find perplexing- in nearly a decade of using Windows CE based PDAs, I
have never found one that won't sync via IR.

The data backup software was a proprietary Dell product only included in the
PDA's ROM. It won't restore to anything but itself (or another identical
model of Dell.)

Well you can install new software on the Dell by copying the PPC installer
file (the ".cab" file) to a flash memory card using a card reader and
running it from File Explorer on the device (or using File Manager on the
device with WiFi to browse the hard drive on your PC and copy the installer
file, or e-mailing it to your Axim, etc., etc., etc.)

Probably the easiest method would be to download PIM Backup from
http://www.dotfred.net/- there are separate versions for WM2003 (what your
Dell runs) and WM5/6 (the Wing uses WM6.) Unzip the WM2003 version, copy
the .cab file to an SD card and get it on the Axim (or use any of the
alternate methods I mentioned), run it, backup the PIM data to the SD card,
and transfer it to the Wing via card reader, IR, BT, e-mail, etc., get the
WM6 version of the app on the Wing and restore the data from the transferred
backup file.

Good luck!

Glad it worked out, but the thanks really go to the author of such a neat
little freeware utility, made more important by the lack of included backup
utilities in WM5/6 devices.
