Here, it seems that the process wcescomm.exe accounts for about 9% of
my CPU usage when I'm 'doing nothing' on my WinXP SP1 PC. That's
consistent over many observations. There are lots of other processes
running, but Task Manager shows zero for them in the CPU column. And
reinforcing that, if I run Filemon, a high proportion of the entries
are like these:
wcescomm.exe:1912 QUERY INFORMATION
wcescomm.exe:1912 CLOSE
wcescomm.exe:1912 OPEN
wcescomm.exe:1912 READ
Is that 9% typical for other users with their PPC cradled under XP
please? Seems a heck of a lot to me...

Terry,
On my Pentium IV 2.0GHz running WindowsXP Pro, I run right at 9% as well.

FWIW, doesn't happen with hX2755 using 802.11 sync,
whether or not the "Sync continuously" option is enabled...
W2K SP4, WM2K3SE. 0-1% CPU as reported by TM.
Maybe USB overhead?

Please log in for more thread options Hi,
What you are seeing is the overhead to perform PPP encapsulation for packets
that are being sent to the USB port. Because of the high speed connection,
PPP is a very CPU intensive.
With Windows Mobile 2005 devices you will see different results because
Microsoft changed the protocol to use remote networking.

Thanks all. Looks like I have to accept it as about normal then.
Still seems very surprising that another 40 or so processes (including
Explorer and whatever) plus half a dozen waiting applications all show
'0', while the application that is merely watching for the rare
occasions when I add/edit a task or appointment, or place a file in
the PPC area, is at 9%! I could edit a largish graphic for that!
Of course, I could switch it to Manual instead of Continuous - but
show/hide quoted text
then I'd forget, and miss an appointment <g>
