ActiveSync says it can't read files when synchronizing Frank 05-02-2006

Hello,

I happen to encounter a strange problem with ActiveSync 4.1 on Windows 2000
when synchronizing Word documents with a Toshiba e310 pocket pc, connect via
USB docking station.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance!

Trouble is:

While almost all *.doc files are converted from desktop to pocket pc without
any problems, a few (albeit important!) are not synchronized. Instead, the
synchronization process halts with an error message going like this (I use
the German version, so I just translate the error message - it might read
different from this translation in the English version of ActiveSync):

"the file converter could not read the necessary files from the drive"

Has anybody else had this problem, too?

I don't think ActiveSync means that it can't read the document, because all
these troublesome documents can be opened and read (tested with word). These
files aren't opened (and therefore locked) when synchronizing.

I also tried copying all files and pulling the copies directly into
ActiveSync's explorer window of the pocket pc's storage. Same error message.

I de-installed and re-installed ActiveSync 4.1 - problem remains.

How could I solve this?

Many thanks in advance for any hint!

With best regards,
Frank

Hi,
With ActiveSync 4.x, Microsoft removed the file converter for Pocket Word
documents. I suggest that you disable the conversion in ActiveSync on your
desktop.

Hi,

Thanks a lot for your help!!

Will try this. However, since the Toshiba is running Pocket PC 2002 and the
desktop documents are mostly Word 2000 and some of them Word 2003 - will I
still be able to read these documents correctly on the pocket pc without any
conversion? (I thought pocket Word is missing many functions of the "real"
Word?)

With best regards,
Frank

Hi,
The Pocket PC should be able to read the native files fine.

Hi,

Thanks for your help! So far, every file I tried was read fine (except for
the included pictures).

(However, the Microsoft documentation warned about possible crashes or
erratic behaviour when opening unconverted documents). Unfortunately, my
version of ActiveSync 4.1 allows only a complete disabling of conversion (not
selective just for *.doc).

I hope that Pocket Excel will be able to work with unconverted XLS files,
too...

With best regards,
Frank
