ActiveSync passthrough? The PocketTV Team 12-21-2006

does anyone knows how to configure a Smartphone (e.g. Cingular BlackJack) so
that it will use the ActiveSync PassThrough to connect to the internet
through my PC (when it is connected to ActiveSync)?

someone suggested that i use a proxy, but that's not what i want. i want
the Smartphone to use the ActiveSync PassThrough.

apparently the BlackJack has no setting item to tell what connection should
be used to access the internet (i.e. GSM or USB-ActiveSync-TassThrough).

All the Smartphone emulators can connect through the ActiveSync PassThrough.
is that not possible with real smartphones?

any suggestion?

I can tell you it is possible, and I would have said default, were it not
for your issue. My wife's SmartFlip just does it. Doesn't even need to be
partnered. When I hook it to my PC for loading programs etc, I just connect
as guest. Uses the home network and internet link just fine via
Pass-Through. Most be some configuration issue but I couldn't guess what.
I-Mate provides cab files for most of their phones for many carriers that
you just run and it sets it up for that carrier.

ok, thanks.

so that's quite what i thought:

it looks like a bug in the Cingular BlackJack, i.e. the BlackJack is not
capable of using the Pass-Through.

I'd lean more toward a setting somewhere. Using Pass-Through is pretty
inherent in the OS. Can you turn the cell radio off in the BlkJck? Might
force it to look for another option. We are still creating a little network
between the device and the PC, which typically is not on the same subnet
your home (work) network is on. That's what messes with firewalls and such.
Does Pass-Through work with other devices on the same PC? If so, then
naturally you'd look to the device for the problem.

There is the possibility that Samsung or Cingular disabled the PT, but I
can't imagine why they'd go through the trouble. Can't imagine most folks
would opt to browse the net on a 2" screen when within USB cable distance
off a regular monitor and keyboard.

i think i've tried about all the relevent ones.

yes, i tried that, no effect.

yes, it works with all the devices i tried and all the emulators, too, on
the same PC. it's not a firewall issue. the BlackJack always tried to
access the network through its wireless radio, even when sync'ed.

> If so, then naturally you'd look to the device for the problem.

that's my feeling.

maybe they didn't do it on purpose, but they created a bug that prevents it.

whether it makes sense or not for most people is irrelevent. it should
work, and it does not.
