ActiveSync of Outlook - Does this work?? Kevin Adams 06-11-2006

Just picked up the Moto Q, installed ActiveSync 4.1 and trying to syncronize
with my Outlook 2000 client. Don't use Exchange Server at all. Release
notes indicate support for my "older" Outlook. However, sync only works for
contacts. Calendar is very odd - a limited number of entries were created
and no notes at all.

Documentation on Outlook support seems to be non-existent. Have used other
sync tools with other mobiles (HotSync) which were much, much more useful.

Any suggests?

One thing to remember is that the Q is a Smartphone, not a PPC. The SP OS
doesn't support Notes out of Outlook. There are third party notes apps,
which will sync with Outlook notes, and I don't know if Motorola supplied
anything.

Calendar sync should work fine, but you do have the option of limiting past
appointments. Right click calendar in AS and select settings.

You should be able to sync tasks and mail out of Outlook to, unless you are
attached to an HTTP mail host. Mobile Favorites are syncable, and there is a
beta of OneNote Mobile out that syncs. Beyond that third parties can provide
sync options for companion programs on the phone and desktop.

First - thanks for the response. Before your posting, I was able to get my
calendar to sync - but only after disabling my contacts items. (BTW, I
don't bother with email).

So I now have my calendar items and task items. I reenabled contacts and I
think it's working there too.

Sven - you mentioned Outlook notes are not supported. This is really odd as
the Microsoft literature is mixed about this. Actually, I can't find
anything that says it isn't. I did find several websites with references to
similiar complaints. See - http://www.bevhoward.com/ASync.htm as one
example.

Is there REALLY no way to sync' my PC PIM notes with this Windows Mobile via
ActiveSync?

Also, anyone know the benefit/value of ActiveSync 4.2 Beta?

Do you have a Notes app on your Q? I would bet not. Given the lack of a
program to read them, notes sync isn't supported. I use something called
SmartPhoneNotes. It adds a reader and an AS conduit that allows syncing with
Outlook Notes on the desktop. It allows creation and editing as well.

Notes sync is supported on Pocket PCs and Pocket PC Phone editions, and both
those platforms include a Notes application.

There were some bugs cleared up in AS4.2 over 4.1, which was a great
improvement over 4.0. Been running 4.2 since it was offered with a general
impression it is more stable.

I haven't try it myself, but I believe PhatWare's PhatNotes Smartphone
Edition provides Outlook Notes synching.
