ActiveSync issues: synchronization and backup Minherz 07-26-2005

I have two issues related to my Motorola MPX220 smaprtphone running Windows
Mobile 2003 Second Edition
Version 4.21.1088 (Build 15101.1.3.2):
1. Synchronization of appointments with Outlook. I found several posts on
this subject but neither answers my problem. I use ActiveSync 3.8 on
Windows2000 with Outlook from Office 2003. The system has GMT+2 time zone
(both in time/date settings and Outlook calendar time zone options). It also
has automatic DST checked. The smartphone has GMT+2 set. Automatic DST option
does not present in smartphone. I found in registry under
HKLC/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Clock parameter HomeDST which i tried to leave as 0
or set to 1 without any effect.
Now, when i synchronize device with desktop my appointments shift an hour.
If i synchronize using "Synchronize clock" option of ActiveSync then my
device has its clock shifted any -1 hour together with appointments. If i
disable this option then appointments appear shifted but clock remains. What
should i do?

2. Another issue is Backup feature of the ActiveSync. It remains disable
after i connect the device to desktop and synchronization activated. What is
a way to enable it? Is there any other way to backup my device?

Thank you.

Another f**cked up aspect of the Smartphone OS. You probably used a Pocket
PC before as I did. That backup function of ActiveSync works on Pocket PCs.
But when a Smartphone is connected, that Backup function is grayed out.
Why??? Both devices are Windowsmobile, both connect with ActiveSync, why
won't that backup function work?

Complain to Microsoft!!!! I sure hope that is remedied with WM2005, that the
backup function works on both devices. Does anyone know about this?

Really, the only solution for backing up the Smartphone is to buy a
commercial backup program. (Perhaps the companies that sell them got after
Microsoft to not let the ActiveSync backup work on the Smartphone, so they
could sell more of their product.) Until recently, I think the only such
program is Sprite Backup. Recently I read about another SM backup program
that has come out, I forget the name.

Regardless that these backup programs are expensive, and that it really
sucks that the AS backup doesn't work with a smartphone, one really should
buy such a Backup program, as backing up is essential, especially if you
have done a lot of configuring, installing programs, etc. That could all be
very easily and quickly lost. (Not the contents of the storage card, but
everything else, which includes the registry, all the configuration, etc.
(In the couple of months I have had my SMT-5600 it has froze up completely
several times, losing everything in main memory, all configuration, etc.)
With a recent backup to restore, you haven't lost much. Backup often!

Do you have GMT+2 set to the current geographical area? It looks like the
device is applying DST ahead of the correct begin/end period.

There are some places where the time zone is the same but different
countries have different DST start/end...

I have all three places (just checked) set to GMT+2 Jerusalem. I have a
feeling that this is a kind of bug in ActiveSync desicion or interpretation.
Can it be configurable through registry?
What about answer on my second question (regardless of another user comment)?
