ActiveSync gets stuck half-way through Calendar Michael Levin 01-31-2008

I am keeping my Calendar on an exchange server. It used to sync beautifully
over-the-air with my PPC (XV6700 WM5). Now, it stalls half-way through the
calendar sync - the little green progress wheel just keeps turning, and it
sits there for hours. I've discovered that

1) an emulated WM5 running on a PC does not have a problem with it
2) a sync performed right after a cold reboot doesn't have a problem with it
3) after a restore of my system from a backup (which does *not* include
"personal databases"), the problem comes back
4) when I attach the PPC to a PC and do ActiveSync of the calendar through
the PC (which has Outlook which in turn gets its calendar from the Exchange
server), the same problem occurs - stuck, halfway through Calendar.

Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this? Something has crept into my
calendar that chokes Activesync onto the device. How do I find it? Does
anyone have any tools for validating the PIM data on the Exchange server to
figure out which is the bad entry that's hanging it up or another way to
troubleshoot this?

Mike

Tough one- it seems a setting or program restored to your devie causes or
enables the problem, since it works after a hard-reset.

Hopefully, if we can find the Calendar event it doesn't like, we'll fix it.

Slowly and painfully.

No tools I'm aware of, just trial and error. Since it also has the problem
with the desktop sync, I'd use that for speed/efficiency.

First, go into Outlook and get your Calendar events into a list mode for
ease of cut/pasting. Create a subfolder under the Calendar folder (call it
"Temp" or whatever.)

Cut/paste ALL of the calendar items from the main folder to the sub, and
connect the device. This will wipe the events from the device (which only
syncs with the main folder.)

Now, move (cut/paste) calendar events from the subfolder to the main a
couple of dozen or so at a time, and see which group it chokes on, then
pull a few of the "choke" batch in/out of the main folder until you find
the culprit. Once found, open a new item and recreate that appointment
info in a new item and delete the original, and all should be well.

That's great - thanks very much Todd. Do you think the ActiveSync log
files (I had "verbose" turned on) are of any use? Are there any instructions
anywhere on how to read those for troubleshooting?

I've never seen any instructions for reading them, but logs can sometimes
tell you exactly where and when something went awry.
