I have an iPAQ5450 which I can synchronise with my home desktop using both
the USB Cradle and a Wi fi connection. However, no matter what I try, I
cannot connect and synchronise with ActiveSync using Bluetooth. It is
important to have the Bluetooth connection as I use both my home machine and
my business laptop when I'm "on the road". I have the same problem with the
laptop.

I have tried both the (TDK) Widcomm and the Microsoft Bluetooth drivers, but
I suspect the problem is with ActiveSync or a rogue registry entry. Each
implementation of these drivers is completely different, but I do not think
the problem is with the Bluetooth drivers as my Nokia 6630 mobile phone
connects under Bluetooth and synchronises perfectly, and I can use all the
functions of Nokia PC Suite with Bluetooth, using either the Widcom or
Microsoft drivers.

I am running Windows XP SP2 and Active Sync 3.8. Bluetooth connections can
be enabled between the desktop TDK dongle and the iPAQ but I keep getting
the following error message:-

"Microsoft ActiveSync cannot recognize this device for one of two reasons

* The device was not connected properly. To start over, disconnect the cable
and remove the device form its cradle. Then, connect the cable to the PC,
turn on the device, and place the device in its cradle

If the device is still not recognized, click Help

*The device is not a Smartphone or Pocket PC. To keep ActiveSync from trying
to connect to this or any other device, select the check box below.

Stop ActiveSync from looking for devices"

I have followed these instructions but with no success.

Can anybody help please?

I can't help exactly, but this used to work for me on SP1, since moving to
SP2 this no longer works - I get the same error message. I've tried this on
multiple machines with mutliple BT radios. Everything else works fine over
BT: laptop->phone, ppc->phone. Like you, USB, IR and ENet activesync work. As
far as I can tell, the laptop and ppc are connecting, but activesync itself
is unhappy.

Not trying to hijack/piggyback, just hope this points you in the right
direction, as that is where I need to go also!
I had my iPAQ 3715 Bluetooth working yesterday, Until, I hooked up my Nokia
3300! Every since, no more iPAQ Bluetooth! Com ports still look OK.
Maybe there is some incompatibility?

Also, just a note.... I have found that the iPAQ/ActiveSync seems to have to
be initiated from the POCKET PC, not from that laptop. I could NEVER get it
to start from the laptop (IBM with builtin B/T)

I will just sit back and watch this tread, as it is your thread.

I had my laptop working with my cell phone and ppc for a year, so I'm pretty
sure in my case its a different issue, particularly since I've tried pairing
my ppc to a different computer (that doesn't have a cell phone association,
or even any kind of BT previously installed on it).

Also note that when you pair a device to a PC, you get several services
added under the Services tab. I've noticed for example that DUN gets added
for both cell phones and ppcs. So you may get conflicts this way. I'd go a
check the Services for each paired device. This is why I tried with a
completely different PC that had never had BT on it before.

Also I believe the only way of starting BT activesync is to initiate it from
the ppc.
