Before you give up, try disabling RNDIS by going to
Start/Settings/Connections(Tab)/USB-to-PC and uncheck the "Enable Advanced
Networking" box. This clears up a lot of connection issues.

I assume by "Connections (Tab)" you mean t the bottom of the screen..

I'm given the following 4 options:
Beam
Connections
iPAQ Wireless
Network Cards
No sign of "USB-to-PC"

Yes.

That's unfortunate... Starting with WM5, mobile devices used the RNDIS
(networking) method of connecting to a PC nstead of the old "USB Serial"
method. Apparentlythis caused problems for enough people that newer
releases of WM5 added the USB-to-PC applet to allow people to turn RNDIS
off and let their devices connect the "old-fashioned" way.

Perhaps there's an updated ROM available from the manufacturer of your
device that might add the USB-to-PC applet? Alternatively, you might try
connecting via bluetooth or infrared if you can scrounge up a dongle of
either type for your PC.

What updates I did find require things to be working normally to install so I
guess I'll have to find a new PDA. Thanks for the suggestions all.
