ActiveSync Conflict - Deleted Contacts and appointments Paul Proefrock 12-18-2005

I am sync'ing a PDA (iPaq 2215), SmartPhone (MPx220), and two desktop
computers (home and work). I am running into issues where contacts and
appointments are getting deleted, without having made any changes to them. I
am confident it is due to ActiveSync comparing time tags and misinterpreting
the data.

Is there potential of conflict with this many devices? is there a preferred
connection procedure to keep this from happening.

The desktops are running WindowsXP Pro/SP2, ActiveSync 3.8. SmartPhone is
WinSmtPh2003.

I've had to set my "autodelete upon exit" back to NO as an insurance policy.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a solution?

Thanks

Paul P

Hi,
Are you using the option to sync the Contacts and Appointments by category?
This can present problems because you are using 2 devices.

Also, is the synchronization completing each time you connect? If the
device is not able to keep the connection going, it can cause problems as
well.

Finally, are you aware of the need to sync the first device twice to be able
to sync all the data on all devices? This is because the first sync only
gets the data on the first device and the desktop the same. When the second
device is synchronized, then the desktop and the second device are current
and the first device does not have any of the updates from the second
device. Then if you sync the first device again, they should be all the
same.

Chris,
Thanks for your input.

1) I was using "sync by category" thinking that would only move those people
to my SmartPhone. Once I learned ActiveSync moved ALL contacts but only
tried to sync those categories, I changed to Sync All. The deletions didn't
show up till 2-3 sync's after that.

2) I make sure the sync's complete before disconnecting. Been down that
road, have that T-Shirt

3) Double initial sync is new to me. I will step thru sync'ing all devices
one more time, trying to get all alike.

Is there a preferred sync topography? Should one machine be the master or
should I be able to carry the phone or PDA to any system OK? Or should it
maybe be a constant straight line (Phone - Desktop - PDA - Second Desktop.
Never connect phone to second desktop?)

Or should I be able to connect the Phone or the PDA to either machine and
make it work

Again, thanks

Paul P

Hi,
I'm glad to hear you got the problem worked out. I know it is complex.

As for the master, I suggest making changes to the same contact on only one
machine. That way it will sync to all others without a conflict. You can
connect a second PC however it does make synchronizing more complex. Now
you end up having to sync each device twice with each PC in order to make
sure it has the same data for the same reasons I outlined before. It get
more complex as the number of devices increases.
