It's more-consistent across different methods of connection. That is, if
they completely removed serial-port sorts of emulation, regardless of
whether you were connecting across GPRS, CPLD, WiFi, or USB, everything
would be network connections, TCP/IP, etc. That, in theory at least,
simplifies things with respect to the connectivity of the device to, say,
Exchange.
Unfortunately, I guess at least, there are so many third-party firewalls,
VPNs, etc., etc., etc. that they stepped out of the frying pan (two types of
connectivity, serial and network, each used in a different situation where
they didn't really have to deal with the worst of either in the other
situation for each), and into the fire.
It's still a mystery to me who, exactly, the ActiveSync/WMDC guys are, who
they work for, and what sort of test situation they live in. It's pretty
clear that it's an ivory tower somewhere, well-separated from the reality
that most users of Windows Mobile devices live in.
