ActiveSync 4.5, as soon as it connects to my new iPaq 111, disables wireless
and wired network connections until the computer (Windows XP) is rebooted.
Syncing with the iPaq goes just fine, except of course for things that need a
network connection to be synced (like ePocrates and AvantGo). This is bad,
since the most-used application on the iPaq would be ePocrates.

Have tried uninstalling ActiveSync, downloading the latest subversion of
4.5, reinstalling. Installed with firewall entirely off. Turned off
wireless while installing. Everything goes as before. Tried "Repair" option
in Add/Remove Programs applet, but this fails with 'Internal error: 2356'
related to ActiveSync.cab, and the repair unwinds with no changes made.
(This also happened when trying to repair the ActiveSync installed from CD.)

I got a copy of ActiveSync 3.8 and installed it; it once again works
perfectly with my old Pocket PC (iPaq 2210), but of course doesn't recognize
my Windows Mobile 6.0 device. I guess the new iPaq has to go back.

Any suggestions?

There were problems, there's a long thread from back in the day that you'll
probably find if you search this group for "activesync kills wireless" in
GoogleGroups, with some Intel wireless adapter drivers/connection
applications. They did what you describe. There are a few standard things
that you'll want to check before concluding that this is the problem, like
whether you're counting on any Virtual Private Network software to keep you
connected to the networks that you're using. If so, it's quite possible
that, since the iPaq looks like a network adapter (and it does), that the
VPN software would drop the secure networks when you connect the iPaq in
order to maintain security. If that's the case, finding, on the iPaq the
Enable Advanced Networking Functionality checkbox (it's in the ActiveSync
application on the device), and turning that *off* might allow it to work.

If none of that investigation is fruitful, you might verify that you have
the newest drivers and configuration programs for your network adapters on
the XP computer.

ActiveSync isn't *doing* this; some other program, driver, etc. is deciding
that it's the right thing to do when the connection to the device appears
via ActiveSync, so you need to broaden your search for possible fixes.

Thanks, Paul, though I'm sorry there's not a ready answer hidden in there.
Since my posting and before reading your reply, I did a "repair and update"
on the Intel wireless application in Add/Remove Programs.

I generally connect only to the internet through my work network, but I have
on board the software to allow connection to a secure database (Intergy)
that's on that network. (I last did that the day it was installed, about 11
months ago.) I'll try restarting without that capability (if I can figure
out a reversible way to do that), and see if that helps.

I found the "Enable enhanced network functionality" switch under Settings |
Connections | USB to PC.

I'll report whether any of this helps.

Paul,

Success seems to have been achieved. That is, I've synced while online
wirelessly, and successfully installed ePocrates (the application that needed
that).

Naturally, I had performed TWO of the suggested changes (updating the
wireless driver and unchecking the Enhanced networking functionality box)
before again running ActiveSync 4.5, so I'm not sure which one helped. But
both seem sound suggestions.

Many thanks, as I was ready to give up and return the device.

The enhanced network functionality is more-likely. That essentially changes
how the device is viewed by the PC when you plug it in. Now, instead of
network card, it acts like a serial port. As you might imagine, there are
fewer compatibility problems with that.
