ActiveSync 4.5 cannot be installed on Vista Andy 05-16-2008

I have recently upgraded my computer to Vista Ultimate which I know comes
with Windows Mobile Device Centre (WMDC).

The problem I have is that when I connect my device I get a pop up message
saying 'ActiveSync 4.5 cannot be installed on Vista' every time.

Although this does not seem to stop my device connecting etc, the message is
getting very annoying and spoiling my use of Vista so far!

The question is how do I stop the message and/or uninstall AS 4.5?

If that's the only thing spoiling your use of Vista so far... (nah, too
easy!)

I haven't seen that on either of my Vista machines, so my wild guess is
that some written-before-Vista/WMDC 3rd-party software on the device that
syncs data with Activesync is somehow looking for it on the PC and/or
trying to get the PC to install it, so the PC responds with the error. Do
you have any software that added a sync conduit to AS? (Some software that
syncs with a PC will just place the files that sync in the device's My
Documents directory or a subfolder, but others add a plug-in to Activesync
to sync with user or program-defined folders.)

This is all just wild speculation on my part, of course, but the only thing
I can think of that makes sense.

I did have a pocketpc backup software but uninstalled as Vista and the
software provider didn't or couldn't have/find a solution.

I can't think of anything else or where to start looking.

Ok I was being a bit generous when I said this was spoiling my use of Vista,
the more I get into it in particular the security lock down the more I am
having second thoughts about it. But that said I had the same thoughts about
XP, & 98 etc!

Are you sure it's completely uninstalled? Some of them (like Sprite) have
a backup to PC option that might try to fire up AS. (Again, I'm speaking
in theory only!)

Admittedly, I was reaching, so I might be sending you down the wrong path.
I've just never seen that error, or heard it described. How about
connectivity? Any apps that require AS to reach the internet on an
otherwise unconnected device? (Weather plug-in, Avantgo, etc.?)

I agree 100%. While it's fun to Vista-bash, I ba hed XP just as hard the
first year I used it, then grew to love it. I'm even getting used to the
security features, annoying as they are. Like all dialog boxes you see on
repetitive tasks (like the "are you sure" dialogs on deletes!) you
eveventually anticipate when they'll appear and be ready to click-through
them!
